Medication safety is a multidisciplinary process that requires collaboration and planning to put in place processes that will promote a standard of care focused on patient safety. AORN's recommended practices for medication safety address the unique challenges to medication safety in perioperative settings. The perioperative registered nurse plays a vital role in developing and implementing these recommendations. By recognizing the intersection of the medication use process and the nursing process, the perioperative nurse influences the provision of safe patient care related to medications by identifying potential risks that exist in these settings.
